HISTORY
The history of Marmaris dates back to around 12,000 BC. Archaeological findings from Nimara Cave on Bedir Island, discovered during excavations in 2007, confirm this early settlement. The region was later known as Caria, meaning “land of Kar.” Due to its fertile coastline between the Aegean and Mediterranean Seas, Marmaris has always been an attractive settlement area.
Throughout history, Marmaris hosted many civilizations including Carian, Egyptian, Assyrian, Ionian, Persian, Macedonian, Syrian, Roman, Byzantine, Seljuk, and Ottoman cultures. The ancient name of the city was Physkos, whose ruins can still be seen in Asartepe.
GEOGRAPHY
Marmaris is located in southwestern Turkey, where the Aegean meets the Mediterranean Sea. It is surrounded by mountains, forests, and bays. The region includes Adaköy, Bedir Island, Keçi Island, and Güvercin Island.
Dalaman Airport is about one hour away, and Rhodes Island is only 45 minutes by ferry.
CLIMATE
Marmaris has a typical Mediterranean climate. Summers are hot and dry, winters are mild and rainy. The region receives high rainfall compared to many parts of Turkey due to its mountainous structure.
